Steve Boyd and the Loners Announce Debut Album King of the Loners, Out November 14 on Bassdog Records
Steve Boyd may be best known for his work with legendary rock band White Animals, but on his forthcoming solo release, Steve Boyd and the Loners: King of the Loners, he steps firmly into the spotlight with a sound steeped in Americana and the classic pop-rock of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Drawing influence from artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Seger, and Tom Petty, the album is a rich, personal exploration of American identity and storytelling.
Set for release November 14, 2025, on Bassdog Records, King of the Loners features 13 original tracks that explore themes of personal freedom, loss, resilience, and reinvention. While Boyd is joined on a couple of songs by celebrated guitarist/songwriter Will Kimbrough (Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band, Emmylou Harris’ Red Dirt Boys), he produced the album himself and played every other instrument—a testament to both his musical vision and versatility.
Boyd also penned every song on the album, co-writing just three: “Drowning” and “Up For Air” with longtime friend and collaborator Jim Sherraden, and “Say We Didn’t” with Kevin Gray, his former White Animals bandmate.
“Growing up, a lot of reasonably conscientious young men went to college to avoid Vietnam,” Boyd reflects. “In the ‘80s, I joined a band to avoid college.”
That band was the White Animals, a Nashville-based underground rock group that built a cult following through relentless touring and boundary-pushing recordings. Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Boyd came up playing horn in the marching band before translating his early grasp of music theory into something louder, sweatier, and far more electrifying: rock and roll.
“I started college at David Lipscomb University, and I really didn’t want to be there,” he says. “When I got the chance to join the White Animals, that was it—I dropped out and hit the road.”
Boyd toured with the White Animals for seven years before the band dissolved. He quickly formed The Claimstakers, who released one critically praised album before fading out. His first solo record, Some Strangers (2017), leaned into a contemporary blend of rock, blues, and gospel, signaling his growing confidence as a solo artist.
In 2024, Boyd teamed with Gray to co-write and co-produce the White Animals acclaimed Star Time album, which drew praise for standout tracks like “Ready to Go” and "In a Post Apocalyptic World (Would You Be My Girl)". Included in his White Animals song discography are cult classic, and MTV fav “This Girl of Mine,” and college radio staple "Constant Attention". The release of Star Time served as both a celebration of the band’s legacy and a reminder of Boyd’s ability to write pop-rock songs with emotional weight and maturity—a rare gift in today’s music landscape.
With "King of the Loners", Steve Boyd fully embraces his own voice—unfiltered, unvarnished, and unafraid to dive deep into the American psyche. It’s a record for outsiders, travelers, survivors… and anyone who’s ever had to reinvent themselves to keep going.
